Sociology of Discourse takes the perspective that collective actors like social movements are capable of creating social change from below by creating new institutions through alternative discourses. Institutionalization becomes a process of moving away from existing institutions towards creating new ones. While discourses entail openness and enable the questioning of what is instituted, institutions offer continuity and stability to social mobilizations. This dual movement of openness and stabilization explains how social struggles ensure their continuity, without completely assuming the logic of the dominant order. The book proposes an analytical model of social change, which is unfolded through three intertwined areas: discourse, communication, and institution. Collective experiences of social change, from the anti-globalization movement to Occupy, illustrate the main theoretical points and concepts. Through the example of the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages, the book concludes by analyzing how social change from below is possible.

HKUThe Centre for Research on Language Policy and Practice at the Faculty of Education in The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will be soon advertising one full-time postdoctoral position (of 2 years) and two part-time Senior Research Assistant Posts (of 15 months each) to work on a new research project on Migration, Social Class and Language Education in Hong Kong, funded by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR, Hong Kong Education Bureau).

The project is titled "Migration, Social Class and Language Education in Hong Kong: The Case of Mainland Cross-border and South Asian Youth", and is led by Dr. Miguel Pérez-Milans (Division of English Language Education, Faculty of Education, HKU). The project’s steering group also includes colleagues from HKU (Dr. Xuesong Gao, Dr. Katherine Hoi Ying Chen, Dr. Rizwan Ullah, Mr. Thapa Chura Bahadur), Hong Kong Institute of Education (Dr. Yuen Yuet Mui Celeste) and King's College London (Prof. Ben Rampton).

The project's goals are as follows:

  • To describe the linguistic practices of South Asian and newly-arrived and cross-border students from Mainland China in the context of their trajectories across different social domains, communicative genres and settings inside and outside the schools in Hong Kong.
  • To analyze the identities that are constructed for and by these students, and how, in the course of these trajectories.
  • To examine whether these practices, identities and trajectories are shaped by wider linguistic, social and/or cultural ideologies that impact on these students’ socio-economic position.
  • To identify possible mismatches (if any) between language-in-education demands on these students and the type of practices and linguistic repertoires available to them outside the schools.
  • To design a resource package for educators and policy makers with guidelines and examples of activities on trans-lingual, trans-cultural and trans-literacy pedagogies in the Hong Kong context.

The expected commencement date of the project is Dec 2015. The PDF is expected to take up position as soon as possible from December 1s, 2015. Rubdy & Ben Said: Conflict, Exclusion and Dissent in the Linguistic Landscape

This book focuses on the linguistic landscape as a site of conflict, exclusion, and dissent arising from mechanisms of language policy, language politics and language hierarchies. It examines the way language can be used in particular ideologies to marginalize and conceal other language and as a vehicle for social contestation, impacting local communities as well as the vitality of certain sociolinguistic groups.

The chapters engage with exclusion, covering broad socio-historical, economic, political and ideological issues that go much beyond language dimensions, such as the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring. The case studies highlight the role of the linguistic landscape where words and images can demonstrate the tension between the dominance of global capitalism and the grassroots reactions of local communities contending for visibility, social justice and economic and political survival. The book argues that concern with this aspect of the linguistic landscape helps forge links between landscape, identity, social order and power.

With the support of ISCA (the International Society for Conversation Analysis), the Language and Social Interaction group of the University of Groningen.

IACA16 will take place in between two ICCA-conferences (2014 and 2018) and will have a focus on the research process rather than on research output. The academy is meant for CA researchers in all career stages, including PhD students. It will offer members of the CA community an environment to learn from each other about analytical choices, modes of analytical reasoning, and the different technologies that may support CA research.
